I've always wondered about this and maybe someone has the answer.
I once had a hen that decided to make a nest in a bush, there was roughly 25 eggs in the nest. Now this was our only hen so I know that they were only her eggs...
However, a baby chick takes about 21 days to hatch...But the babies hatched within a day of the first hatch. A total of 22 babies hatched! Biggest load I had ever seen from a hen...
How did they all hatch so close together if the hen probably only laid one egg a day..?

They don't start incubating till she actually starts setting on the eggs.

So, she laid the eggs and once she laid her last egg, she began to set. 21 days later, PEEP.

Edited to add: Even if she laid 1 each and every day it would have taken more then 3 weeks to lay them all herself. This also proves that 3 week old eggs can and do hatch.

22 of 25 is a bunch of chicks. Where did all of those chickens go? Freezer? All I saw today were the 19 week olds.
