we dispatched a mean SLW roo yesterday (I know some may not agree, but an animal only gets 1 chance to hurt one of my children!). I also dispatched a 4 week old cornish x last week (leg problem). I'm looking for some help in identifying the organs I pulled out of them. Of course I know intestines, heart, liver, gall bladder (green, on liver), gizzard, lungs. There were also, in the rooster 2 large (slightly bigger than the heart), pale organs. In the cc there was 1 large pale organ that had an opening. I'm wondering if the roos organs were kidneys? do chickens have kidneys? What different organs am I going to find in the females than the males (how do I identify them)? I had the mm heavy roos last year, and my cc this year are staight run.

Sounds like the testicles in the roo, they are internal in poultry, right next to the kidneys. Kidneys are darker red just like all other critters.

The pale open organ sounds like your CC was a pullet, it should have been attached to the intestine at the vent end. That would be an infundibulum. You can read about them here, or google images if you want to check.

EDIT to add I found this great picture of the Reproductive tract

that's ok, I laughed at myself! LOL I told my 13yo son what they were, and he said "WOW! they're bigger than MY balls!". Maybe that's why he was a mean roo, that much testosterone in one little animal! I have noticed that the hens are much happier, and come out of the coop with much more confidence now. They were just kinda poking heads out, looking around for him (he was generally waiting outside the coop for them), and then hightailing it out before he could catch them. Yeah, he wasn't a gentleman:rolleyes:
