I feed the all flock and give calcium separately because of roosters and chicks and it's just simpler for me.
I don't know what your birds gets free ranging, you probably don't either, I don't free range myself....I just try to keep in mind that the formulated feed have the nutrition and minerals and vitamins they need so I keep the other things in check so as not to dilute that too much or often.
My first thought upon hearing that a chicken is pecking feathers to eat is that they need animal protein, so that's why I suggest it.
