im building a coop right now for the chickens i will be getting but im not sure how well these breeds will be able to fly up to the roosts. I will have a silkie, cochin, malay, orpington, faverolle and a brahma. will these birds be able to fly about a foot up? i know the others will not be good fliers but will the malay?

We have an about-five-week-old Orpington and the same age Light Brahma. The Brahma is not that good of a flyer at all....she can barely get to the top of the tub we're using as a brooder. The Orpington, on the other hand, is quite good at getting around. Others may have different experiences with their own. I believe as they get older and become "chickens", they shouldn't have a problem getting up about a foot.

oh yeah, malay's can fly! Give them a few weeks and they'll all be on the roost

My Faverolles like to fly to the top of their coop which is maybe 4 feet up, BUT, it doesn't occur to them to fly over the top of some 4 foot netting I use to seperate them & their poops from my patio. So yep, they can fly, will they fly? Who knows. Clip the flight feathers (primaries) on one wing and that'll take care of most flying problems.
