I have 18 chicks that range from 6-8 weeks old. They are all fully feathered and seem like they’re ready to go out. I’m in the process of rebuilding the coop, but would like to put them out within the next week. This isn’t my first time with chicks but I want to make sure I’m doing it right this time.. as last time I felt I put them out a little too early. There’s a picture attached of the weather for the next week or so, and pictures of my chickies. Is it warm enough to put them in the coop? When and how can I introduce them to my four hens and rooster? Also, i have five turkeys. Two toms and three hens. Should I be cautious when introducing the turkeys?

They will be old enough by the time you get it ready. When introducing, try the “see but no touch” method where they are together but separated by some kind of mesh for a week or two, so they get used to each other. Then they can graduate to free ranging together during the day and eventually full time. Are the turkeys going to be in the same coop? If not then I wouldn’t worry about it too much, just supervise the first meetings.

I’m planning to be done with the coop today or early this week. But yes the turkeys stay in the same coop, but most of the time they roost outside. They get along with our chickens for the most part although I notice the turkey hens sometimes chase our chickens around when in the morning.. I’m not too worried about the turkeys as much as if the chicks are ready to go out. I took the heat lamp away about a week ago so maybe they’re acclimated.

The chicken chicks - free Willy!

The turkeys - no, unless you have them hooked on meal worms. I don’t sell, promote or distribute mealworms, but they work.

The first couple years I had turkeys I’d always let them roam with the other little ones. They ALWAYS put their heads down and walk away only listening for the others cuts and chirps following their noses not knowing where they’re going (poof gone forever) - unless I’ve had them on mealworms for two weeks. I never lose turkeys anymore. I also have 11lb bags of open mealworms on hand at all times. 😉
