My chickens absolutely love berries and other types of fruits. My friend's sister told me yesterday that she read chickens won't lay/ lay poorly if they have fruit? Truth or myth?

I've heard that too, but still give mine fruit and they lay just fine. A chilled watermelon rind makes a great treat on a hot summer's day. And my chickens will completely raid my berry bushes if I let them.

My birds get samplings of a a variety of fruits daily and they are healthier and happier for it. Eggs are perfect.

Is there an age at which one can begin to give them fruit? I have six day old chicks and my persimmons are starting to fall. I have given them crickets and they catch moths at night already...

As always, moderation is the key. Also if you are feeding anything besides chick feed you should make sure they have access to grit. Sure is fun watching the little ones play keep away with treats!
