I'm contemplating getting two goslings. I understand geese should not be kept without another goose. My question is - can two of the same gender be "happy"? Or do they need to be a male/female pair?

Also, if I get two male geese (and no females) would they try to mate with my ducks during breeding season?

In my experience not a problem.

We've had 3 male geese for 8+ years. They get along and hang out together and seem happy - they do have several acres to roam which probably helps. They also enjoy their water tubs - very funny to see a full grown goose squeeze into a small feed tub 😁. A couple of years ago 3 goslings were dumped at our property and one of the male geese looked after them and led them around like it was their mama. All 6 now hang out together

We also have Muscovy and runner/Rouen cross ducks. I've never seen the geese try to mate with them, but the geese get noisy and surround mating or fighting ducks exhibiting their displeasure 🤣

I can just see that .

Great to know the males can get along and be happy without a female.

I don't want to breed geese, I'd just like to have a few on the farm. They will have plenty of space to roam during the day, my ducks roam the house yards and the horse and donkey pastures. I think they'll be able to happily share a fairly large shed with the ducks at night.

Absolutely! @Callender Girl has a same-sex pair of American Buff Geese. I just sent an unmated American Buff to live with an elderly Embden hen who lost her mate and wasn't doing well. They are BFFs now.

i have two ganders that hatched out earlier this year. it's tempting to add more - either another set of ganders or hens. i know they're very social birds & i wonder if more birds might be better for them.
