Can we build it? Yes we can... probably... kind of!

I would die if all of ours ended up being cockerels!! lol. I'm sending the eggshells to an Avian DNA lab in Miami so we'll know the genders by the time they're a week old.

I feel like all I've done is sit in front of the incubator today. I started the day with 15 eggs. Two were DIS, so I'm down to 13. I have 9 babies so far and the other 4 have pipped but we're still waiting. I have to be present for each hatch so I can make sure to take the eggshell and label it for sexing and put leg bands on the chicks as they hatch, so I really hope these last 4 chicks hatch before I go to bed for the night.

The girls' incubator (which is at their house with them) has 10 eggs, and so far it looks like all 10 are going to hatch. All have pips, all but 3 have hatched already. They're over the moon with their new babies! They're going to keep 4 pullets and possibly a cockerel (the county ordinance technically says no, but they only really have 2 neighbors and both are super excited for them to have chickens, and even said they should keep a rooster.) So we'll see what they decide.

I did go over yesterday and work on the coop, but forgot to take pictures. I'll take some next week when we go over to finish up.

I'm excited for your neighbor girls, this will certainly be a time for them to look back at someday with great memories!

Best of luck with both hatches :jumpy

My birds... have gone mad.

I hatched a total of 12 chicks yesterday/this morning. I hadn't been over to my property where my chickens are in a few days, so I needed to go over and scoop poop/collect eggs today. What do I find in two of my nesting boxes? BROODY HENS! Are you kidding me? Both sitting on all of the eggs. :barnie

I've never had a broody hen before (I've also never had Orpingtons before, the breeds I had were mostly hybrids and breeds not prone to being broody.)

What should I do?? Take the eggs? Stick some of my day olds under them? (I don't know how many days they've been broody, but not more than a couple of days.)
