can we use cedar chips for the brooder

I would not recomend buying the small blocks of shavings from the pet stores as at $2 ea the the big one that i get is about 20x more shavings for $5 and as the chick get bigger you'll see why I get the big one. straw of SHREADED newspaper will work, I say shreaded because just news paper will cause spraddle legs.

Last time I was at TSC they had a huge stack of bagged shaving with a sign in front og it saying "Pine Shavings". I just happened to notice that in a small circle on the bottom of the bag it was stamped cedar shavings......just a warning to make sure what they are pushing off as pine is really pine.

You might want to do a search on BYC for "cedar shaving". The topic has been discussed ad nauseum.

I've used cedar chips in my brooder houses with chicks and with NO problems. For those who've been to my place, that speaks for itself.

God Bless,

Someone on another thread uses Playsand from Lowes - Excellent idea and cost effective. I have used crushed walnut shell because I could not find anything labled pine shaving just wood shavings and I didn't want to take a chance, but it was expensive.

I am planning to go with the sand. They can eat it, bathe in it, it is scoopable. Sounds perfect.

cedar will look more red in color, aspen is a little more yellow and spotty in color, pine will be almost white. If you are concerned about what you are buying. Pet shop shaving will say clearly on the front of the package but like I said this isn't a wise way to buy shaving if you are using any amount at all.
