*Can You Articially Inciminate Chickens??*

Well I was wanting to breed my best layer with my bantam roo mainly because I hope the size might decrease and I would have a bantam/LF that lays alot of eggs. Alot of my bantams do lay good but not as good as my big hens.

Am I in the wrong for thinking this? I was wondering if it would mess the offspring up??

Although a lofty goal you may find that what you hope will be the best of both breed traits will magicaly appear the first time out, may not be realistic. There are so very many things that go into developing that combination, and to be honest it may take many several generations to get it figured out and a very intense and dedicated project. Keep in mind you will have to keep many many birds to laying age and then what are your plans for culling ??. Folks sometimes often overlook the hard parts of a breeding program such as culling and if your birds are pet's and you cannot do the deed, then a plan B is in order.

Im glad I posted this first.

I had no idea it was that intense and I appreciate your info and input. I was really not trying to start a new breed just some more yard babies that layed good eggs that were small like my bantys!

Thanks for the help! So you think it would hurt the offspring for the bantam Roo to cover me LF hen??

Just wondering

No it will not hurt the offspring at all. Go for it. It seems fun.

al6517, you are the biggest buzz kill ever. Its not that complicated. If she wants to develope a smaller chicken that lays more eggs than her current bantams, she's going in the right direction. Unless she's looking to accomplish her own variety that breeds true, it shouldn't take more than one generation. The OP simply wants more yard pets, and there's nothing wrong with that. I think it sounds fun and is a great idea.

I had a salmon faverolle rooster mate with my white leghorn and had some awesome chicks mostly roosters go figure lol, but I've got one cool looking rooster out of this mix his name is Prince Charming. He's white and looks like a salmon faverolle not feathered legs though. He's starting to get some cool colors in his feathers though like black and the white is starting to turn like a coffee cream color almost a year old. I have him with my one hen who's a Naked Neck ( hybrid ) her mom was one of my Australorps . No eggs from her yet but she should be laying soon and he has mounted her..

Gonna be some cool looking chickens and it's mostly a hobby for me and they are pets.

I understand the whole cutsey yard pet idea, I was merely trying to point out the issues that will result from such a pairing, Buzz Kill !!!!

Sure she can do whatever she wants and I knew she wasn't trying to create a new something or other. I was Only bringing to light that from her initial post it wouldn't be Just abrakadabra Poof and there you have it the perfect whatever............ I can see the lack of breeding knowledge here and was just hoping to add some insight and trying to help, sorry for helping.

So I will rephrase my post to say............. sure it's a fine idea go ahead, it's great. Let us know how it turns out.

Ok didnt mean to gross anyone out OR cause a fight. I do appreciate al517 knowledge and helpful facts.

Although I may just go ahead and breed them just to see if I can get any fertile eggs. (never tried this before)

Thanks for everyones opinions.
