Can you ask for canned goods donations at a swap?

Was thinking since it is the holiday season, I would like to ask for canned goods donations for the local food pantry for Christmas dinner.
(of course, it is voluntary, not mandatory)

Is this allowed or frowned upon?

I don't see why you couldn't do it, the proceeds from auction sales at the IN chickenstock went to a cancer fund (can't remember which).
