As some of you probably already know, (https://www.backyardchickens.com/forum/viewtopic.php?id=227503 ) I just hatched a mallard duck egg that I found in my back yard. He is all alone and I want to find another duckling for him to live with but the local feed store only has ducklings in the spring and hatcheries only send ducklings in pairs (I dont have room for 3 ducks) The county fair starts on Monday and I was wondering if anyone knows if there are ever people there that have ducklings for sale? I know they always have a part of the building were they keep ducklings on display but idk if their owners might be willing to sell me one duckling. Do they sell ducklings at any county fairs near any of you?

Also if they would sell me a duckling, would he get along with my duckling I have now?

it doesn't hurt to ask

we have poultry auctions that sell all kinds of stuff, but you have to buy the lot, say if you won a bid on a box of ducklings, you've have to take the whole box.

if the two were sinilar in age, then they'd get along, older ducklings like to pick at younger ones.

A few weeks would be all right, but the older one would be quite a bit bigger. You would need to wait a week or so until your little one is bigger as well.

Where do you live? I'm in KY, and have 4 ducklings that are about 2 weeks old.

I live in MI. Are you suggesting that you could sell me a duckling? If so, let me check the fair 1st, I dont like the idea of shipping ducklings in a small dark box thru the mail lol

At our fair we weren't "allowed" to sell any of our birds for liability reasons. We could sell a box though and if it contained a chick or duck no one could say anything. Our friends actually brought a bunch of mallard ducklings they didn't want to keep as they had too many and were giving them to anyone who wanted them. Hope you get lucky. I did find that the mallard babies weren't very nice though. They were very mean to the cayuga and runner babies that were put in the same area as them.

I'll check it out when I go to the fair and let you guys know what happened.

I hope if I find another duckling that he isn't mean to my duckling, I also hope he likes to be held, my duckling likes to sleep on me while I watch tv lol

My mallards are also nasty to other ducklings! I find it very off-putting.

That's interesting. My pair of two-month-old mallard drakes LOVE my latest batch of (nearly) 5-week-old ducklings. They like to curl up in the yard with them to have a nap - they're such sweeties.

However, they're terrified of my adult ducks, especially that big, old, mean Pekin.
