Hey all,
I'm running a community garden with a chicken coop, and I'd love to get the birdies some fermented feed. We have a chicken team, so the feed needs to be located out in the garden. But we don't have electricity out there - no heated/cooled outbuildings. Can we still ferment feed?
The summer shouldn't be an issue. When it gets colder, though, I'm not so sure. I was thinking of trying to rig up a solar panel and a saltwater aquarium heater in the feed bucket. Maybe also create some sort of double walled container to keep in the heat.
Thoughts? Anyone out there ferment their feed outdoors? Farmers have been making silage for centuries, so I know it has to be doable.
Thanks!
Kirsten
