Can you have one hen?

We have an old coop out back that hasn't been used for a few years. Weeds have grown up around it. She'd probably be OK in it, but I just don't want her to be lonely.

Thats the thing, you couldn't just leave her in there all day while you went off to work. If you are home a lot and could hang out with her there, it would help. But for hours and hours, days and years on end spending much all day alone would wear on her phsycie. In this case she will need a buddy. However if you are home a lot and have time to spend with her, she might be ok in the coop.

If you do get her a buddy, always introduce new birds over a couple of weeks time from behind a cage. You cant mix birds together immediately without aggression and injuries.

Hubby is retired and at home all day. He has loved all our chickens, but when the last one died, we decided to give up and let the coops get overgrown. Then this opportunity came along for the polish hen. She's so people friendly, and trying to buy pullets to befriend her is beyond our pay grade.

I told my son to tell his neighbor to keep her segregated until I figured out what to do. She's so dang cute and friendly.

Great! At least she is not being picked on now. Maybe there is one other hen your neighbor has that they would be willing to let go with this hen?

Refurbish the coop to make it predator resistant. Then look into ways to make the environment more enriched by providing additional roost, little places to hide eats, hay pile, and a dust bathing area. I have kept chickens singly for years on end and re-integrated them later without issue. Never birds that are visually impaired like Polish. I would give such a bird a haircut.
