We started with 6 two-day-old chicks a year ago, and thought they may not all make it, as warned by others. But all of our chicks grew up tall and grew up right! We built a backyard coop and run, and let them out to forage nearly every day. We love them! I was told raising chickens was an addictive hobby. I didn't get it at first, as I walked out of the hatchery with my little peeping box.
A friend of a friend gave us two chicks who's original batch didn't fare well in the care of a teenager. We took in the 2 four-week-old orphans and wanted more! Now, I have 8 more chicks on order. That will bring us to 16. I'm collecting, I know this. I want to try out all the breads. I like them for their looks, their personalities and their laying abilities. I love giving eggs to friends and family, people at the gym and post office. People love fresh eggs! I haven't eaten a egg since I was a toddler, but my family loves to eat them.
We have a Rhode Island Red, New Hampshire Red, Plymouth Rock, Golden Laced Wyandotte, Delaware, Blue Copper Maranas, Partridge Rock and a White Leghorn. The leghorn was one of the orphans, and I give her special attention and handling to try to keep her from getting too skittish. I would have never chosen a leghorn but I'm glad to have her.
We have a Golden Buff, Easter Egger, Buff Orpington, Silver Laced Wyandotte, Welsummer, Black Australop, Speckled Sussex and a Columbian Wyandotte on order. In an effort to try and not combine another crew together again, what breed do I have to try out? I'd like to get them in the next 4 weeks to blend them with my new babies. Any suggestions?

I as well am a collector, I started with 7 and now I have over 50 and 12 more in the incubator. I love my girls and spends lots of time with them everyday. My chickens live better than me and my husband. If your chickens are well taken care of, Fed, doctored, and protected then I say add more. Whoops I forgot to say if you have the room.
I have:
EE
SLW
BO
Norwegian Jaerhon
White Rock
Barred Rock
Molted Duccles
Red Stars
Black Stars
GLW
Turken
Ermonots (spelling ?)
BA
Silkies
Barn yard mixes
Frizzles
I am sure I'm missing some, I adore my white rock Johanna because of her attitude, I have tons of room and my husband just put on an addition to my coop for about 25 more birds. I can't wait to fill it up lol. I have yet to have any problems adding chicks or chickens to my flock, I do let them see each other for a week and everything goes great especially since I removed a rooster. Best of luck with your new babies!!
