Riding on a horse! :)
Hi I need help!!!!!! One of the chickens that i just got is really sick, she has a infected sore on her neck and under her vent is really red and swollen. And her over all health isn't to good. I know what to do for the cut/huge sore on her neck but what could be causing her to be so red and swollen??? ( P.S. She is SO scared of anything!! none of the other chickens bite but she dose! Its so sad to see her like this, not wanting any one with in 10 feet of her, screaming and biting when they are.) She is really nervous and upset as well ( I was thinking that she might be to scared and upset to lay her egg and is egg bound?). What should I do? I have her in a pen by her self and she has food and water, is there anything else i should be going for her?

Separate her. The strength of your flock is as strong as the weakest bird. May look for internal and external paracites and clean out the wound as best as possible. Red bottom can occur if her bottom is picked clean for some reaosn like mites, or acities if she is an older bird.

Have you checked her mice/lice? Could she have vent gleet, any discharge from her vent, poop sticking to her? I would bath her bottom. If you think she is egg bound, you are going to have to check her for this. Make sure you wash wound several times a day, apply antibiotic ointment or vetericyn spray to wounds.

Ya, When I noticed that she had a wound and that it was bleeding i took her out of the coop and have her in a nice warm place in our garage now. She still has feathers on her bottom but i was checking her over to see if there was something else wrong and noticed that it was really red. The person i got her from said she is 4 months old but her comb is pretty big so I'm not sure. And she has small white bugs ( only about 4 bugs) crawling in her wound and dark brown ones ( again only a few) a round her whole body, I'm still really new to keeping chickens and I'm not sure what these would be and how to get rid of them.

This probably is a stupid question but what do they look like exactly? And how do i treat what ever it is?? I haven't seen and discharge but she is really scared of people and i was trying not to handle her to much ( so i didn't stress her out). I'll check tonight. I have been putting ointment on her wound and it seems to be helping so at least that's good!

Ok, these white bugs are they maggots(small worms, fly larvae)they have to be removed right away, look for more in her vent,be gentle but you have to find them all.If not maggots, then i would guess lice, they are light in color. Did you soak and clean her bottom? Put antibiotic ointment on her red bottom. Could be mites, they look like black dots, very tiny, look around her vent, base of tail. If yes, purchase Sevin dust, dust her repeat in 10 days, and dust coop, nests, roosts,i believe you repeat in 10 days. Look on forum, lot's of info about mites/lice.

I don't think they are maggots cause they have legs and move around. How would i be able to get rid of the ones in her cut? There doesn't seem to be every many of them ether. She also has brown things ( that look similar to the white ones in her cut but i can't see very many of them) around her body. Would they be mites? And would diatomaceous earth get rid of them or should i buy something else? ( I would like to stay a way from chemicals because her immune system isn't very good) Would apple cider vinegar help to? I have heard that it is good for getting rid of worms.

I am new to chickens also, but I seen an article where a woman used dawn to get rid of them...I think she is on FB. Checking
