Can you make money selling chicks?

If you spend time breeding quality birds, more money can be made. Over the past years, I've found that quality must always come first. My Seramas average around $100 a pair, as did my Jim Legendre line Silver Spangled Hamburgs. People may not want to pay the price, but keep looking and you will always find buyers for a good bird.

I hatch out 500 a week and sell out of them every week when they are just a day old from March to June ....as to feed bill I have them all sold before they need to eat.
Plus I custom build incubators and brooders for anyone...so my hobby has givin me a good job that pays the bills...

last year I sold chicks of black copper marans, delawares, barred rocks and mille fleur d'uccles. I only hatched about 50 total but I sold each for $3 and they were all sold out within a week. That alone was enough to cover my feed costs for the rest of my chickens for 3 months.

I was going to say, I never bought a Serama for under $65 a bird. Some run up to $200 bird. Now I have 2 boys and 3 girls, and wanted to start breeding myself. I was wondering about going to pet stores and selling them there. Are there any legalities with selling Seramas to pet stores? Do I need to become certified or something?

Pet stores? Interesting angle... hate to see someone buy a serama for their child and have it fly away. Bet silkies would be popular, though. On a lighter note, there was a post from someone a few years ago here who suggested telling a nosy neighbor they were "Chinese ground parrots".

Chinese ground parrots...that is pretty funny! Well, if they fly, I think that is okay because most of the birds pet stores sell fly, right? I was just thinking they would have to be small enough to be in a cage in people's homes. Hopefully people would let them out in the yard to run around though. At least they stick close to home unlike other birds that would probably just fly away for good. I should see about getting the stores to sell Serama diapers too! Then they can just run around the house with the kids in their pampers!

you can, BUT you need high end birds rarer the better, And a lot of them. With the $2-$4 chicks you just end up breaking even with feed cost if you're lucky.
Most of my bantams are in the $6- $12 per chick range some higher, and am usually booked solid for the year before May. If you go with rare breeds in rare colors and they are a breed of high demand (many rare breeds arent in demand), you can make enough to pay for your hobby and a little on the side. You aint gonna get rich with it though. But a hobby that pays for itself is a great hobby!!

Could you suggest some of those rare breeds you are talking about?

Do you think that EE's, Black Copper Marans, Olive eggers, and a rare color of Orpington would sell well? I don't have any Orpingtons besides Buffs and I was thinking about doing Blue/Splash or Lemon Cuckoo.
