I have 28 hens in total some are 2 yrs and the majority are from 7 months to 18 months old. Apart from 1 mamma sitting on eggs I have 4 persistent broodies at the moment and I collect on average 10 - 12 eggs per day ! They are free range mostly but always have layers pellets available ! Am I overfeeding them ? They seem so lazy and within a half hour of been let out in the mornings they are sleeping on the deck! They don't seem to need to do much foraging ! They are all fat & healthy, looks wise & behaviour wise. Constantly look for any hidden nests (have a dog that will sniff them out) so maybe they are too fat ? What do you think the average eggs per day should be?

My buff orphintong has a cow in the am till she is let out just so she can come in through my doggy door and lay on her bed on my desk and she takes a 2 to 3 hour nap, my otheres just go up on our milldle fence and goes back to sleep till about 8 then there day consist of naping and pecking and laying in there nesting boxes to have eggs (that takes about 2+ hours a day also) so you chicks sound normal to me but I have only been keeping chickens seince april
