Can you raise chickens to eat, and still love them?

That's not funny, that's sad.
You can not love something and kill it at the same time, it's just not possible. And sorry but I find that joke sad.:(
This IS the Meat Bird forum. If the thought of raising, butchering and eating chickens disturbs you then maybe you shouldn't read the threads here. There are plenty of pet threads on this site.

Sorry....but the kind of love it takes to kill something you love is something you may never understand. You have a surface kind of emotion to life and that's okay but understanding the deeper emotions seems to have escaped you. It takes a much, much deeper love to kill something you love, knowing it will die anyway and likely not as humanely as it does at your own hand.

Tell any vet that they cannot love animals and put them down at the same time and they will tell you how shallow that level of thinking truly is.

How is that funny, joking about death? Sorry but really, to me that's sad.:'(

Not everyone is squeamish or mortified about where your food comes from. If you can't joke about chickens coming to dinner in the Meat Bird section then maybe you should take keesmom's advice and not visit this section of forum. No meat that you've eaten has commit suicide, someone has to kill them. And if you don't eat meat, you definitely should be reading elsewhere. If we were to go to a vegan forum to talk about where bacon comes from, it would be considered quite offensive.

I always have to wonder what leads someone to come into this specific forum with that sort of mindset - I suppose someone hoping to shame the carnivores

I would think anyone would understand that going to a carnivore's forum to shame them for eating meat will put them at odds with everyone there. I think that's more the point. Start an argument and then, "poor me, everyone's being mean and picking on me for my personal choices." You would think it would get old, but some people never tire of conflict...

As to joking about butchering one's birds and/or death in general - spend a little time with folks who deal with death on a regular basis (first responders, medical professionals, those in mortuary affairs) and you'll hear plenty of joking about death - from people who are anything but cold, callous, heartless, what-have-you.

Amen! Macabre humor is hallmark of those who deal with death and trauma on a daily basis...it's how one deals with the emotions involved with the whole thing. It also takes an enormous amount of compassion and empathy to remain in that profession for years and also an enormous strength of mind to not burn out under the stress and emotions of it all.

I think many on BYC and other social media feel they have a handle on just what this thing called "love" is.... and wouldn't know it if it jumped up and bit them in the armpit. Feeding treats and giving cuddles is not love...that's affection and a completely different and more shallow thing. It's very self serving and most do it because of how it makes THEM feel to have the chickens interacting with them. That has nothing to do with any real kind of love for the animal and their welfare.

I don't eat meat, well, I eat fish, but I fish.

Colorparakeet, if you fish, then you are killing what you eat. There really is no difference.

If you raise animals for food, you will need to honor them when it is time to make meat by doing the dispatching quickly and in a manner that does not stress the animal. This method also relieves stress on the one doing the dispatching.

Jokes about death are one way of people dealing with the emotional side of the journey's end. This behavior can be found within the ranks of all those who work to save life. It can also be found in the ranks of those whose business it is to end life. I was a member of Special Warfare Group, USN. (Team 1). It was my job to end lives in order to protect other lives, Farm life is not so dissimilar to military special operations, just don't have the "prey" shooting back at you.
