Hi guys. I have six 3 week old silkie chicks all the same age give or take a few hours. They've suddenly sprouted crowns and there is a clear divide in how they look- 3 have thin spikey combs and 3 have small walnuts. They're all related so no breed/genetic differences. Here they are...

What do you guys think? I know it's crazy to think you could tell so early but there are obvious differences between the two types of combs.

Thanks! Emma xxx

The thin 'spikey' combs are non - standard silkies. They do not meet the breed standard. It is not a gender specific distinction - rather, an indication that your birds are most likely hatchery bred or pet quality. They will still be attractive lawn ornaments but non typical of the breed.

Can that happen even though they are all related? All the mums and the dad have standard silkie combs xxx
