Can you recommend a breed??

If you like all three you could always get some of each. Lots of people have mixed flocks and since you are talking about three breeds of large chickens, they should do fine together.

They are all quite large birds, so if you haven't built a coop, be sure the openings and roosts are suitable for these larger chickens. My Blue Orpington rooster Suede weighs about 12 lb and the girls about 8 or maybe a tad more.

LOL, I believe I've met a son of Suede and she's not kidding. That roo has to weigh more than my 6 year old!
The thing I love best about my flock of 14 is the variety. I set out to have no more than 6 by the way!

Started with two adult hens. For years I had no more than 7 and that felt like a lot. Then I found BYC. Ordered chicks, fell in love with ducks and now I'm wanting a few quail. BYC can mean trouble!!! In a good way of course.

This guy my husband works with says he has about 30 chickens and will just give us some. Is this a good idea? Do chickens need to get used to their owners?

Chickens will do fine with a new owner. Are they a breed you would like though? How old are they? Some hens stop or significantly slow down laying with age.
Get a breed you want because chickens can live pretty long............
