can you show with spurs removed?

I only remove spurs from brood cocks. This is just to protect the females in the brood pens.As far as showing if you have a bird agressive enough that you are worried about them hitting a judge dont remove the spurs, remove the bird. Most judges I have shown under will dq you anyway if the bird hits them.

I had a rooster what was breeding one of the hens a lot, she was almost bald. I used the potato method and outer part came off easy, leaving a short, duller spur behind.

I did not know they would twist off ... I cut them off of my LF EE with a hacksaw when the spurs started to curl back into his leg. What does a hot potato do?

The main thing the hot potato does is make it so you can show a cock bird as a cockeral. After you take the potato off you can twist the spur hull off and it will heel up looking like a cockeral. Don

You mean a judge can only tell a cock from a cockerel by the size of the spur? Tell me you are kidding.

I really dont believe you could pass a cock off as a cockerel at a sanctioned poultry show with a liscensed judge.

You can and it has been done. A cock is much more developed than a cockerel however the exhibitor could claim that the bird was hatched very early in the year. Can you think of another way to prove the bird's age?

Some differ. Some state that cockerels must be born on or after January 1 of that year. Others say that cockerels are 1 year or less in age. It depends upon the show.

Every show that I show in it is January of the year you are showing in.I cant speak for large fowl but an OE cockbird is so much different than a cockerel that I really dont see you faking it Our cock birds are usually better than the cockerels anyway so I dont see why you would..Alot of people do show 10 and 11 month old cockerels and thats really what I shoot for at show time. But if you are trying to remove spurs because the bird is mean and hits at the judge you need to Cull the bird. There are too many good birds out there to deal with one like that.

I can see in the OEGB cock birds and cockerels they look quite different, but say a cockerel Orpington or a cockerel Langshan vs. a cockbird. As well as Cornish.

cbbantams, that's just the thing isn't it. The cockbirds (generally) are better than the cockerels. So, if you can fake a bird being younger than it actually is, you are able to move it to the top of the pickings in the cockerel class because the bird is more mature, better filled out and overall a better bird than the rest of the cockerels in the class. And by receiving a first place in the cockerel class, you are immediately able to have your bird in the selection for Best and Reserve of Variety.

Most of the time in my birds the cock's will have a more filled out body but you have to really watch the feather quality on cock's.The cockerels with their new feathers are usually hard to beat with an actual cock bird.Which we do show 13 to 15 month old cock birds against 2 year old cock birds and you can definantly see the difference.Usually by 2 years old our males are finished with showing and go to the brood pens.
