We are planning a move to Central America within a couple of years and our biggest issue right now is trying to figure out which country will allow us to move to it with our chicken. We will also have our 6 cats, 2 small dogs, and sugar glider. The glider is proving to be an impossible animal to import so we're banging our heads against the wall right now. We're trying to research Mexico now and I'm wondering.. does anyone know if we can bring a live chicken into Mexico? Her name is Lady Clucker and she's about 7.5 years old. We'll be moving in 2024 so we don't even know if she will still be with us, but we're hoping! Does anyone have an answer regarding this?

Also, long shot maybe, does anyone else have a sugar glider and can tell me if there is any Central American country that will allow her to be imported?

Thanks!

I didn’t know what a sugar glider was. I googled it. So adorable.

I think the thing with moving an animal to another country or even across state lines is that the animal may bring disease or disrupt the food chain in the area.

So that will be a tough one.

No idea if Mexico will allow a chicken crossing the border.

Probably yes.

I found a page on the US government website:
https://www.aphis.usda.gov/aphis/ou...alization/sa_by_country/sa_m/ct_animal_mexico

It talks about taking animals from the USA into Mexico.
There's a form for "Adult Gallinaceous Birds"
It looks like a vet needs to fill out the form, and a number of tests must be done.

I don't see sugar gliders, but I do find this advice:
"For species not listed, the requirements are not known. However, exporters wanting to ship livestock or germplasm whose requirements are not listed above, should have the interested party (importer/buyer) in the country of destination apply for an Import Permit at the appropriate ministry. This Import Permit will most likely outline the specific requirements."

I think that means the US people don't know what Mexico requires for some animals, so ask Mexico ;)

And of course if you think of getting any more pets--you might want to research where you can move with them, before getting them.

Like Nat J said, there are forms to bring in animals into Mexico. Birds are more difficult than dogs or cats, I tried bringing in my pet parakeet that I bought while I was in the US (thinking it would be easier to bring in a small animal) and I just didn't have enough time before my planned flight back to get all his tests done so I gave it up for adoption.

Check with the government branch called SENASICA. You will need a permit to bring in your animals and you can check with them also if you need a permit for your sugar glider. Some "exotic" species require permits to be kept, don't know if it will qualify as one. But people here have gotten permits to keep Jaguars and the like so...

There is gamefowl sellers in Mexico and they import live game birds to sell or fight. I do not know the requirements nor the fees but yes it is possible to import to Mexico there is probably need for vaccines and vet authorization.
