Can young cockerels distinguish if other chicks are pullets or cockerels?

I currently have 6 week old chicks and 1 week old chicks in side by side brooders. The two groups can see each other. The 6 week old cockerel seems to be very focused on one of the 1 week olds. Are young chicks able to recognize the gender of other chicks? Could his staring be an indication that the 1 week old is a cockerel?

I've never read anything on the topic, and I doubt it has been studied much scientifically. I definitely would not use that as a basis to sex a one week old chick, though. The cockerel could be attracted to the one chick for any number of reasons.
