Canadian Geese - 7/21/2017

I am used to seeing Canada geese every spring at my place, too. This year, something happened to one goose's nest and a solo day-old was found by my african geese in my barn. One pair in particular immediately adopted the baby. So, it's been neat to watch the gosling grow up, and especially fun lately as she has been starting to fly and will do circles around the house.

It's illegal to keep Canada Goose so you might need to contact a wild waterfowl rehab...They will introduce it to other Geese that will help it migrate....

chickens really makes an excellent recommendation. Contact your local Fish and Game agency and let them know you have the bird on your property, it was adopted by your domestic geese and it has not left. In all likelihood they will say that is fine, send you some forms to complete, and check on the bird now and then. They can, of course, come out and take the bird to a rescue facility where it will be introduced to other Canadians and will eventually migrate. It may, like in the movies, return to your place each year just because it is programmed to do so.

Failure to do this could result in your being determined to be in violation of the Migratory Bird Treaty Act of 1918 as amended over the years. One recent amendment changed the financial penalty for keeping a Canadian Goose (a misdemeanor) to as much as 15 thousand dollars.

Enjoy the bird while it is with you but do not risk things by not reporting it. Best of luck.
