Hey family of 5 - are you planning to order them direct thru Frey's or thru a local co-op/feed store? In Peterborough - ready to lay pulets from Frey's are only Red Stars, chicks come on a variety of course. But I believe thru local stores you may be able to get them delivered. Some have them only in Chick days, some may have different deliveries you can have go to that particular store.

I am checking out my options myself - start up next spring as well. Not sure how I am going to go yet.

Hey welcome, I am near Wiarton! Those sound like some good solid breeds!

Hi Eatmore, fancy seeing you here!

There's no wrong or right way! Have fun, if the birds don't do what you want, sell or eat them. We started with dual purpose in mind and have now some of those, prettily colored with nice temperament, but also getting into some breeds that are more of a heritage layer or lay unusual eggs, and some breeds more meaty! Unfortunately as many as you think you may want, you will probably end up with more unless you or a spouse has a will of iron

! It's not too painful though, lol! Think about what is important to you as far as hardiness, temperament (not every member of each breed is the same that way), egg laying frequency, size, colour, broodiness, free ranging and mothering ability etc. A great table for narrowing it down is the Hendersons breed chart only thing I found with them so far, sometimes the temperaments are very different to what the table says, and my brown chanty eggs aren't that big! Try and read the Storey's Illustarted guide to poultry breeds book. Good luck deciding on one or two breds, I still can't!

ETA Maybe EMC, I keep seeing more breeds I want!

Hello Canada people!

I've been hosting the monthly egg swaps for a few months here in the states. A few of you have contacted me with inquiries on joining our swap. As far as I know, shipping to Canada is fine, but getting eggs shipped from Canada is the problem. So I was wondering if any of you would be interested in joining a monthly egg swap for Canada? It would be just like the swaps here, only in your country

Please send me a pm if you are interested, and I'll get something worked out

I would be happy to host one, but if someone else wants to, that's fine too.

Thanks!

Thanks so much !
I would be interested as I am going to be getting a used incubator .....

but because of my chicken addiction and lack of brooding space i have to wait until after the colder months are behind us...or else It will cause a D I V O R C E .....plus the person I am buying it off will not give it to me until then because she is a chicken addict....well actually she has the big Mama of the incubators as i call it ...and has decided to sell her styrafoam incubators to us newly addicted people ...plus she has been married for many years and has her husband totally trained...ha ha ha !!!

How does one go about "swapping" eggs ...what if you do not have any " quality" eggs ....I only have one Roo that is a mutt .....??
Thanks again

You can check one of the monthly swap threads, the rules would be the same for what I have in mind. Make sure to send me a pm so I can remember who's interested. It would probably be a few months, so I'd contact you then to let you know one is starting. That is, if there's enough people interested.
