Canadians check in here....

No chickens yet...I am a teacher and I am planning on getting fertilized eggs to incubate in my classroom. I will then bring the chicken home as my own. Thought it would be a great learning experience for the kids as well!
That's so exciting! I'm sure that the kids will be fascinated. And you get to keep the birds too! Sounds like a great deal to me ☺

Howdy @Albertan
That's quite a few eggs already :) I don't know much about Amerucaunas other than their eggs are yummy. Based on the ones I used to get, they probably all came from the Amerucaunas.

Canadian questions at what temperature do you heat your coop? Do add light to get eggs in short days.
Can wild birds get ill and or other way round from the chickens mine apparently are a afraid of the noisy flock of blues jays here.
Hi speckledyhen, New Brunswick here...
I have had chickens for the last five years. We tried lights in the coop the first year and the birds laid all winter, this year we didn't put lights in the coop and the birds laid all winter. The difference was, we put a very large window facing east, so they get the sun as soon as it rises.
We often have below freezing temperatures and cold wind chill but only put on a heat lamp when it is really cold with a strong wind. Our birds do fine. A few suffer frostbite on their combs but we try to help that with coatings of bagbalm.
Wild birds can infect your chickens so it is wise to try to cover your run with netting to keep them out.
I truly enjoy our chickens hope you do too.
