Cancerous lesion?? I can't figure out what this is! *Pics*

I am no expert, but from a quick google search, it looks like doxycycline is safe for chickens. Dosage is 10-20mg/kg. If you need help converting that dosage, lmk your chicken's weight and I can do it for you.

It does look like an infected cyst to me, too. I would definitely do antibiotics to see if they help before putting the chicken down.

Yes , I am a new egg hummm .... but have had experience with this boil-like lesion . I double checked with my husband and he showed me what he injected my little cochin hen with . It is the brand Durvet and is just called Penicillen for Horses , goats , pigs , cattle . We have ten horses so keep this med on hand . He gave her 1 cc and injected right next to the lesion . In the meantime we had been putting scarlet oil and neosporin on it . About after the third injection it came off , basically by itself as it really shocked my husband . The center under the crusty stuff was yellow cheezy-like brain matter . I had been trying to get the thing off with no luck at all all . It would bleed and had pussy spots in it , totally gross ! She is healed up now and doing well . It may have killed the feather folicles in that area but I am happy to have her alive . I have pictures of her healed area and will try to post them .

Hope this helps ,

I appreciate all the help.

I did confirm with my vet friend on the doxycycline. I am giving her 1/2 of a 100mg pill crushed in some water. I give her to her directly in her mouth with a small syringe.

The Epsom salt soaks also appear to make the area not look so angry as well as the neosporin.

She is eating and drinking fine, and even appears to be moving around a lot easier.

I am hoping this all works. ( it seems like it is to me!!

I have not weighed her but she has to only be between 4 and 5 lbs. She is a tiny little thing which is why I was so worried this was going to take her out. You can see in the photo my thumb and how big this area is, and for such a small little thing to have such a big infected area like that. But I guess they are tougher than they appear.

I will keep you posted and try to get some more pictures tonight.

Exactly. To me it looks like an injury that has abcessed. If it were my bird, I would soak it in very warm Epsom salt water until it was soft. I would take a new single edge razor and cut all around the outer perimeter and try and lift the entire scab off. I'm betting you will find hardened abcess puss under it. In any event, you should be left with a clean/fresh wound that you can clean thoroughly with betadine and then apply regular Neosporin and let it heal. If you're up for it, you could even close the wound up with a stitch or two - using regular needle and thread. But I certainly wouldn't put her down without trying to remove and clean the wound first. I've cleaned up lots of yucky boo boos that look similar. If you don't get the abcess cleaned out, it just keeps "growing" and getting bigger. It will look like cooked egg yolk or hard cheddar cheese. There may be a tiny bit that is still soft and liquid but, as was stated, for the most part, infections in chickens turn into a solid gunk that has to be cut/dug out.

It looks like a puncture wound of some kind. She may even still have a thorn or somethng in it. Keep soaking in warm water with soap and then apply neosporin oint. as much as you can.
