Candeling and hatching diary.

Hi everyone I love the way this thread has take off I have been away for a week as I went back to colorado for my foster dads funeral. I am pretty happy to be home. I ordered alot of shipped eggs in befor I left but unfortuantly they did not get turned properly so I am not sure what kind of hatch I will get from them here is a partial list of what I have set right now also going to be putting in another 150 BYM eggs and turkey eggs at the ed of the week for an order.

Lavender Orpingtons purchased off ebay set on 4-31 received 12 eggs 5 are still viable

Silkies from BYC they were badly scrambled and all showed as clear

Silver laced wyandottes ebay 14 eggs received 10 still doing well

Gold laced wyandottes ebay 14 eggs 10 still good

Gold Laced Cochins 12 received 7 still doing well

Assorted eggs Ebay 12 received only 3 left

I also ordered quite a few different marans but they are difficult to candle

for a comparision I set 38 of my BYM eggs and so far 29 still going strong.

I also have Araucanas and OEs going right now they were local I did not get an official count on them but they are comparable to my BYM

Like I said difficult to really use this as a normal time because they were not turned correctly while I was gone but time will tell.

Good luck with your hatches sasimpson77. I have 4 chicks hatched and 59 yet to go. I hope they all hatch by Saturday as theirs a swap I'm planning on taking them to for sale.

I got the Monster bators finally in place and hooked up, just come in from cleaning the trays. I'm hoping I have a least somewhat of a steady temp going by morning as I have now 10 dozen eggs sitting on the cupboard waiting to set.

I have 63 put in lockdown lastnight with 3 external pips right now. I don't have enough bators atm to set the 9 dozen eggs I have sitting to go in. Tomorrow is set for getting the 2 monster bators wired and running so I can get my eggs in and fulfill the orders that I had come in over the weekend. I will set up one just for incubating and one for hatching. Each will hold 150 dozen eggs so I won't ever have a problem again with no room to set or hatch. The only dilema at this time is getting enough fertile prod red eggs as the person wanting them only has one roo to 70 hens, I did find her 5 more Rhode Island Reds but she expects all to hatch red as she's Amish and they don't allow different colored chickens in her family. Prod Reds are a hybrid so may not hatch all red and I'm trying to explain this to her and using RIR roos will help keep the color more accurate. They want 300 prod reds and now 300 Cornish x which I've never raised but will have to look into them as I just got another call tonight wanting Cornish. I never knew how fast word would travel when I purchased these industrial cabinets. My husband as agreed to allow me to start a small hatchery and I'm awaiting antigen to have someone come certify me for state flock tested. I went to a swap last Saturday and sold all but 3 chicks, good turnout for me. Theirs another swap this coming Saturday but it's an hr and half drive one way and I'm waiting to see if I can bring roo/hen from each breeding pen to test to allow me to sell chicks. The first swap allowed me to do it that way as I had sold all last year and tests were all neg on my birds but this year Wisconsin changed the regulations a little. Problem is they now only get antigen in 1000 dose bottles and most testers don't want to buy it. Always something that stands in the way. I can get a tester to come out this week but it will cost me 140$ just for their fuel charge and 1$ per bird for test. In the end I think it will pay for itself but it's just so frustrating when all these state testers are on the list to provide tests for people but when you call they say they only test their own birds. Anyhow, good luck everyone with your hatches!!

Some places people get certified so they can test their own birds and only them, I ran into this a few years back trying for NPIP, but guy was willing to let me bring the small flock I had to his place and would do it, but things didn't work out.. Kind of messes up the others that want someone to do it for them like the states says they are meant to. Glad I moved to Mo. (Formerly from Wi.) here you call the state, they set an appointment and a tester comes, free of charge. I looked into it last year but family came before birds and biz last fall. Maybe this year will go smoother. Its still a local that does the testing but they DO come test.

That is how it works in Ohio, but it did cost me $35 for NPIP testing. They waived the trip charge because I also had them avian flue tested so the trip was covered under grant money for that.

Well this afternoon they are coming to test. The kicker is she is coming 145 miles away as noone closer will do it. If the people in my county had the antigen to do it they wouldn't charge me as my kids show in the fair and I'm providing show birds to the 4h kids in the area. I think that theory works better but they need to get the antigen sooner. Next year won't pose a problem as the test is good until June 2015. Overall in the end I will make my money back but I'm not selling hundreds of birds like some are at swaps. Some batches are only 20 total. Not anymore though with the new incubator. It's running right now going to see if the temps are holding and if so the 10 doz I have sitting will be going in. The only diterent I'll have is getting enough eggs to hatch now. Prior with all my incubators(smaller home made) I could only handle about 90 eggs total.
Woke up to now 8 chicks hatched and a few zipping. Most are SS as they always tend to hatch earlier than the rest. I hope they are all hatched by Saturday for the swap.

HELP!!!

I think I may have just stopped an amazing hatch. I didn't she was hatching, and while turning the last batch she got bumped, and rolled. Her crack was down, should I roll her back, or leave her?

Oh how sweet! Congrats! I can feel your relief!
I'm at day 20 with 4 pips. One has been pipped most of the day. No zipping yet. Come on chickies! I am ridiculously anxious. I'm annoying myself!
