Candeling and hatching diary.

So I am expecting more eggs this week so I will start a candling diary on these shipped eggs. By the way this weekends hatch is up to 48 out of 58 that went into lockdown. I had 12 shipped eggs in the original bunch of which 6 made it too lock down and I had 5 babies successfully hatch one internally pipped but then died ( i think I could have saved it if I had intervened but I chose a hands off approach this time) so I figure that isn't to bad seeing as how they had detached air cells. Hatching in the cartons up right was very successful I highly recommend that method my chicks could not play kick ball with the unhatched eggs and I felt better about them in general I did not have any humidity issues and I was in and out of the hatcher more then I should have been my humidity only dropped below 50% after I tried streaming from inside the hatcher the cellphone strangely seemed to affect the humidity. What does everyone think of my overall results? By the way I originally set 75 eggs but out of one group of 18 10 of them were clear. and then there was a mixed group of clears and blood rings in the other eggs which left me with 58 at lock down.

Were they actual detached? or just loose??

Sure I will send them on over lol with 48 of them I told the kids they can each pick one but will probably be two each lol and the rest have to go especially with purebreds in the future.

Nope actually detached and actually have a set going into lock down tomorrow where one egg has an actual dent and the development is great the air cells are the worst I have ever they are still rolling and saddle shaped I will probably put them in lock down today because I don't want them turned anymore and they are bantams so they could actually hatch early they even look further developed then usual I will take some pictures so you can see what there air cells look like. Here is a pic of the egg with a dent in it the eggs around it were in fact broken.

I'm on DAY 15 right now, started with 35 in the Hovabator and down to 28. 6 out of the twelve eggs from my flock were infertile, and a 7th shut down around day 8, it had no change in the past week.

Currently in the cooker:

5 assorted RIR & Wyandote, fertilized by my monster EE.
23 White Leghorn (from UCONN Ag School)


I'm not sure how old my rooster (3rd owner) is and I know the golden hen is nearing the edge of her egg producing years (she is at close to 4) - I was hoping for several hybrids just for unique cosmetic features and friendly behavior but sadly over half of the eggs were infertile - the last hatch of 20+ eggs from my flock only yielded 3 beautiful chicks, which were promptly eaten by a neighborhood critter just days after I moved them outside.

I grabbed 2dz WL eggs to hopefully have some companions for whatever might hatch from my eggs, but 'm not sure what I will do with all the WL if they hatch. They don't have much meat and I'm anticipating a 50/50 split of the sexes. A dozen hens total would be more than enough for me, guess I'll be giving some away!

Lockdown this coming Thursday.

I see you have them marked but I really can't see the air cells? Have you set them already? When I get shipped eggs, I let mine sit on top of my bator for at least 8 hours. Once the 8 hours is done then I put them in the bator, big end up and let them sit in the bator until I see development.

For ducks it takes a little longer then a chicken egg to see development so you have to give them time. Do very little very little movement, I usually shift them left and right just slightly twice a day, you don't want them to stick to the shell but you want them to stick as far as the loose or detached alr cells.

I have never had much luck with detached however, I did read if you let them set for 48 hours in a cool area like the basement, then stick them in the bator without turning them, it's possible to get those detachable to stick. I have not tried it so I couldn't say for sure if this works or not. One good thing is NONE of the eggs look shooken up. If they were you would see the yolk at the bottom of the shell and not floating at the top. So they look good as far as that.

Ok. I turned the heat up slightly and set them early this morning. They're in an egg case from the grocery store, although they don't fit perfectly in the container it is holding them steadily upright with chubby ends up. There's lots of head height, so tomorrow I'm going to place a folded small towel underneath one side of the container to tilt the eggs slightly and "turn" them that way, do you think that would work?

Truthfully, I did my best to mark the air cells. Not sure I got them perfectly accurate.

LOL, what did you put on the egg? I usually use candle wax.

So the air cell was actually floating around in the shell? WOW, I have never had success with air cells floating around. What did you do with the egg once you go them and seen that they were floating?

Did you poke holes at the bottom of the egg carton? If you have a turn just set them on the turner and keep it off. If not your carton idea is good..

No, didn't poke them. I'll poke them when I place the towel in there.

I had to take the turner out, I think these eggs might be too big for it.
