I candled last night on my day 7 and it appears that probably 19 out of 21 eggs have the air pocket at the pointed end of the egg. This is my first incubation ever and everything that I have seen says the air pocket should be at the top or the chicks will die. Please share your expertise with me. Thanks

Good morning Jon. Likely what you are see'n is the clear part of the egg not yet occupied by chick. At 7 days anywhere from 1/2 to 3/4 of the egg should be dark. Any dark spot that is not shell paint indicates development. I tend to open ones im sure are clear to be sure Im right. Good luck.

Thank you very much. I am trying to learn as much as possible about this process. I candled all of my eggs and after seeing the clear part I was feeling discouraged. I have been religiously trying to monitor and keep the eggs at the correct temperature/humidity. I currently have a total of 22 eggs, 1 that was not fertile and the rest were like that.

Very good sign.... I would hold off candling or handling them too much, I know its hard not too, I have been do'n for literally years and still get the urge to candle/handle them too much... Any egg is more prone to "quitting" in the first week or so. Then you'll see fully feathered chicks that did everything but pip..... A lot of folks candle at lockdown. I have always wondered if the last candle, transfer from turners, handle'n, excessive movement, had anything to do with this. Sit on your hands for now and keep us posted on your hatch. Bill

hey fat daddy, i am also on my first setting of bobwhites today is 14 days ,i just candled found 4 clears took them out , but i do have some that looks like an air sack on both ends an a few that shows a clear looking like n air sack on the polnted end,

Dont open them yet if they show any sign of development. Just let them go for now.... Bobs that are infertile almost glow. You can see even a blood ring as clear as day. The egg that looks like it is way behind now, will likely look like all the others in a week.... But here again, try not to candle every week ;-) ..... Bobs take'n 23 days, means they are slower to fill up the egg compared to a cot..... Some of these will undoubtedly quit early, It would help you to candle them, then open a couple after your hatch is over. That way you be a lot more secure in what you're see'n with the flash light.... Throwing them out is not urgent. Unless you have a egg cracked, leaking or stinking, the chances of one actually blowing up are very low.

I usually skip the day 7 candling; I can't see any veins anyway, so I candle on day 14, just before lock down. I have an automatic egg turner, so I pull that out, and candle each egg. Eggs that are translucent are tossed. Everything else, including "questionable" eggs goes straight back to the incubator.
Here is a nice link to hatching eggs.
Good luck,
James

thanks for your info,i was worried about a bad egg ruining the hatch, i fell better knowing that happens rarely.
