candle the egg

Hello :frow and Welcome To BYC! There are several nice articles with pictures and videos on candling eggs in the BYC Learning Center in the Hatching Eggs section https://www.backyardchickens.com/a/hatching-eggs-and-raising-chicks

X2, if she has already been sitting on some of the eggs for 4-5 days or more and you put more under her, she will probably not stay on the nest long enough for the later eggs to hatch, if she does stay, you want to be sure that there is food and water close enough to her so the hatched chicks don't starve to death while she waits for the other eggs to hatch.

Welcome to BYC!

Looks like you have been given some great advice here. Definitely follow the link that Kelsie has provided to candling eggs. It is easy and fun to do.

Good luck with the broody hatch and I hope you get some spring chicks soon!

If you don't have a flashlight, or if your batteries are dead (like mine always are) you can use the light on a camera phone. I know an Iphone light and a Galaxy S3 light are pretty bright. I have used both to candle some eggs.

And candling is easy. I use a high powered flashlight, and take the egg into a dark room (I go in my bathroom b/c it has no windows, and if I shut the door its completely black), place the flashlight directly against the egg and you should get a pretty good outline and/or visible details!
x2. Good luck! Oh, and welcome to BYC!
