Candleing Brown eggs

How can you tell if a brown egg is fertile?

I only know 2 ways
1 crack it open and look for the bullseye but that sorta defeats the purpose
2 put it in an incubator or under a broody for 10 days and candle

For me on my RIR it had to be really dark before I could see but when I could it was pretty good. I have read where the real kones like the Black Copper Maran's and such pretty much just have to wait it out. It also depends on the light you are using. I was using one light and it was bad could not see in a white egg
