Thanks, Turks! Sorry that my reply is so late. I have ran my hen off of her best and disposed of her eggs, but she is still trying to lay in her empty best. Poor girl. Guess I'll just try again.

Hey it's fine, but I thought this had started over an incubator?

I have very limited experience with broody hens, I've let three try, with mixed results. Theyre young, and younger birds don't have the experience in setting, hatching and raising, these guys gotta learn. Is ur hen an experienced Ma?

No ma'am. At least, I don't think so. I bought her and her mate about a year ago at an outdoor flea market. They were both black Sumatras. A breed that I knew nothing about, but thought that they were gorgeous! Her mate, the rooster, was killed by a stray dog in my backyard.

I now have another rooster, but he is a golden commet. I had saw them "together" once and thought that she may have been getting ready to have some chicks since she had laid two eggs and has become VERY bloody. I went out a few nights ago and candles the eggs and found that we were not expecting. I have closed her off from her nesting box, today. Gonna see how she acts tomorrow. I don't think that I allowed them to be together for long enough and have heard that I need to pen them up, together, for about three days to make sure that the eggs are fertile. Backing up and punting again!

Well, I went and bought a real incubator because there was just no way of keeping the homemade incubator at the proper heat and humidity. I disposed of all the eggs that I had, except one duck egg. All of the eggs I disposed of were mush, except one and that was the oldest egg of the bunch and should have hatched, but I'm afraid something went wrong with that one too, since the bird inside looked very strange and was definitely not viable.

The duck egg just hatched out of my internet bought incubator and has leg problems. I'm guessing its due to the early days of being in a bad incubator. I am hopeful that the other three eggs that I put in the new one, and were never in the homemade one, will be viable. I'll know in a few weeks!
