Candler - buy or diy?

I am getting ready to incubate 12 Ancona duck eggs. I don't know when or if I'll ever incubate again, but want to do it right. Is buying a candler a necessity or are the diy ones sufficient?

Well, I just took a piece of cardboard, cut a hole in the center of it and "duct taped" it to a clamp light and it's worked fine for me for a number of eggs.
