Am I the only one having a really rough time candling brown eggs?

Some I can't even get a light to penitrate the shell.

Cyn, says to see the veins, what veins, these eggs are speckled and can't define anything. I've seen some black spots come to the top on some. And I think I have more good ones than I might have thought, but what if they are bad ones with blood spots. Am I not doing this right or something?

Sounds like your light isn't bright enough, Deniece. Some shells are just very hard to see through, especially if they have speckles and swirls in the texture of the shell itself. It's hard to say without actually being there. You need an LED super bright flashlight or a slide projector turned so the light shines upward or you could make one-Im sorry, I can't remember what you're using to candle with.

Go to walmart and go to the hunting and fishing area. They should have a mag light that is about 5 inches long and the face of the flashlight is about 3/4 of an inch. If you wait until night when it is completely dark you should be able to see the veins with brand new bateries in this flashlight. Also point it to the wall and adjust the beam so that it is at its brightest. These are adjustable for beam strength. I can see into my dark eggs in this way. Good luck, Jenn

A mag lite will candle eggs alright. The large head size makes bleed through a bit of an issue. Getting a light with a 1.25" bezel or such will be better for candling. The brighter the light source, the better, of course. If you let me know how much you have to spend on a new light source, I can throw out some suggestions.

I have about nothing to spend.

We are in one of those trying to make a new business work stages of life.

What about a brighter flood lamp, or one of those 3 way lamps on the highest setting?

Can blood rings look like jaggy veins, and go from air sac to egg point?

I'm just worried because I can't tell and I sure don't want something going kaboom in my bator.

Just smell them and if it doesn't stink, it won't blow up. You should be able to make it easily to day 14 with no explosions as long as there is no smell and no cracks in the shells. If you can see anything, wait till day 14 too.
