With my first batch of 4 polish, I got one chick that died. So I ordered more from the same place , they sent me 18, I candled today and HALF were clear-unfertilized!!! I will let them know that their rooster might be shooting blanks, LOL. Some of the eggs had large pores as well.
I hope I get at least a few from this hatch.

Half is really good for shipped eggs. What kind of Polish did you order?

My first batch of eggs I got 2 out of 18
My second 3 were fertile out of 18, none hatched...So I think half is really good.

So unfertilized-looking eggs can be caused by shipping? I didn't know that.
Pinenot, I have buff lace polish, and white crested black, and they are supposedly standards, not bantums, but not going to be much bigger than a bantum. I went to that website that you suggested, and it was very interesting. Thanks

Karen, sometimes what appears clear on candling at that stage can just be an embryo whose development was stopped right at the beginning, before any veins formed. It's almost impossible to tell if it was actually infertile, although sometimes after you determine it isn't going to grow, if you crack it open carefully (hit the egg with a knife, dont hit the egg on the side of the counter) so that the yolk stays together in a bowl, you can sometimes see just a hint of red around the blastoderm-meaning that it was fertile but did not develop.
On the other hand, in some cases, a rooster can lose fertility or just not like certain hens and the owner not be aware of it until many, many eggs just don't develop. That's why it's a good idea for the owner of the breeders to re-test fertility at home to be sure they're sending out a good product.

Hi!
At Day 7, you should be able to tell a fertilized clear egg from an unfertilized clear egg by gently cracking it and looking for the blasto- thingy (bulls-eye on the yolk).
Candling clear does not necessarily mean unfertilized.

Good luck with the rest of them

I agree with letting them know, feedback is important.
I didn't crack any of them open, after the last 2 batches, there's just sometimes when a persn can't deal with dead anything.
