Wash your hands before you start so you don't contaminate the eggs with bacteria laden oils and dirt from your hands. Also, don't drop them. That sudden stop is not good for them.

I suspect these are the real dangers of candling.

How dark? I just recently set my first marans eggs in the bator. They were shipped to me and the post office sent them to the wrong town not once but twice! They were very well wrapped and so there were no visible signs of stress, but I'm a nervous wreck wondering how much damage they may have suffered. I keep having "daymares" about broken air cells, etc. I'd love to know of a good light source for eggs this dark (and these are DARK, like a very rich cocoa powder).

I just ordered the Life+Gear LG319 Outdoor Series Super Bright 360 Lumens Cree LED Flashlight here

It's been driving me crazy not being able to see inside all my Olive Eggers dark shelled eggs... and with super dark Black Copper Marans eggs going in the incubator later this week... I just felt I HAD to have it

. I sure hope it works!

What was the Brightness of your prior flashlight that had trouble seeing inside of your OEs?

I have been using a cool lite candler... which works great on light eggs... but I can't see a thing on anything with a dark shell. I went with this particular flashlight because it was recommended on the olive egger site as working really well on even the really dark marans eggs. I've been on the fence about spending 56! dollars on a flashlight for a few weeks... but I finally gave in

. I looked at the one you are getting... I betcha it'll work perfect... and it's like 1/2 the price! I have subscribed to this thread so I can kick myself when you post about how it works great and all

I use a surefire, same thing basically as your redline flashlight you posted. I can't see inside of a pair of OE eggs I have in my 'bator, one is completely opaque the other is just a bit see through, but nothing clear. It can penetrate the marans eggs (not as dark as some of the really chocolately dark eggs), but again, not clearly. All the other eggs are very clear, bouncing embryos, veins, etc.

Since the batteries cost an arm and a leg, I only look in short bursts anyway.

Bummer - What model Surefire is yours?
I had seen people talk of the 360 Lumens Life&Gear(?) flashlight as well. I figured it was overkill. I sure hope the 220 Lumens is enough.
