Hi everyone, I'm new to this and to incubating. We candled our eggs yesterday which was day six. Although I've read online what we're supposed to see i just can't tell what I'm looking at. I've got an awful feeling all eggs are infertile but could someone please look at my pictures possibly give me an idea of what's going on here. x

I don’t see any development in these pictures. It’ll help tremendously if you
candle them in a dark room with no other light except that of the candler.
Thats what I was afraid of. Could it be possible we candled too soon? Should we try again on day ten or is there no point? Thank you for your reply.

yes, try again on day 10. don't give up on day 6. The earliest i would give up would be day 14. In my opinion I think that there is definitely something in picture 1 as i think i can see the eye. GOOD LUCK, hope you get a good hatch.

Unfortunately I don't see any veins or blood vessels forming. But don't give up I would definitely candle them on day 10 or so . When my mama hens were going thru their "everyone wants to be a mom at the same time"stage this post I included below helped me a lot. I was brand new to candling and had no idea what I was to look for or even looking at. Hope it helps and I wish you luck with your eggs and hatch!

Thank you, I'll do it again in a pitch black room on day 10 and cross all fingers and toes!

Be sure to candle them from the fat end. At this stage you should definitely be seeing the air cell forming at that end. I candles 7 eggs just yesterday that were on day 6 and they already had air cells the size of a nickel. And candling in a dark room is a must as well. You should be seeing veining at this point but without candling them in a dark room couod make it almost impossible to see. But I agree, dont give up just yet and candle again on day 10.

Hi all, thank you for your replies. It's day ten so we just candled again. One egg unfortunately started to smell awful yesterday so we discarded it. All remaining eggs appear to now have air cells. One has a very very dark patch, three have shadows and one I think is clear but it doesn't smell so I'm leaving it a few more days. Still none of them have any really visible veins so I'm still completely confused. I'm still hopeful but I'm not sure if it's in vain. I've attached some pictures.

I would say the one in the second pic is definitely not fertilized. All of the others look good as far as I can tell. The darker eggs are harder to tell with candling but the air cells look good so far. And of course it's harder to get good pics and much easier to see in person. Have you seen any movement? At this stage you should be able to see tons of movement.

When I rotate the eggs slowly the dark patches do move but they don't seem to when I hold the egg still. That second picture is the egg we thought wasn't fertile but the others have definitely progressed but there's still no visible veins, granted the maran and leghorn are very dark shells but the silkie is a light shell so i expected to see some veins by now. I never realised how stressful this was going to be lol
