My eggs in the incubator are on Day 6. I candled them tonight and took these pics.

This one has good blood vessels. It was hard to get a pic of the dot. He/she was moving!

This one looks good to me.

This one I think I see the beginning of a blood ring between the arrow and the number 7.

So be kind to me, I am new to this. I have done lots of reading and looking at pictures. I could see the embryos moving in 10 out of 12 eggs in the incubator and 11 out of 12 I candled from under my broody hen. I would be appreciative of any and all responses. Hoping I am doing this right and seeing what I think I am seeing.

Thanks! I love BYC!

I can't see a blood ring in the last picture, but then, I really can't see anything. Blood rings go all the way around the egg. If you leave it for a few more days, you should be able to tell if it's bad. It won't change in appearance.

Wow, that first pic is GREAT. Nice job. I wouldn't worry just yet about the blood ring. Check it again in a few days--if it's bad it will become more and more apparent, and eventually will ooze and stink a little before it explodes (if you're checking on it every few days, you should be able to catch it before it does that). Once you're SURE it's bad, toss it far away.

I LOVE candling. Isn't it amazing? That living creature swimming around in there?

Anyway, good job. Your eggs look great, and you're well on your way.

What are you hatching, by the way?

I don't think I see a blood ring.. It actually looks like a very dark blood vessle and it looks as if there is a chick right at the top left of the # sign... Give it another day or two and look...

I know all of my eggs are chicken! I put an ad on Craigslist for fertile eggs because I had a broody hen gone crazy. (yes, crazy) A lady answered me from nearby and she has black austrolorp and something else I can't remember. She has 53 hens and one rooster. I picked up 24 eggs from her and I think we see evidence of fertility in 22 of the eggs. They were collected over a day and a half at her place! That's one studly rooster. She and her husband began self-sufficient living on their land in December. It is amazing what they have accomplished. I need to ask her to refresh my memory about what those little blobs are in my eggs besides Austrolorp. She raises layers and broilers.

The crazy broody refused to sit on the eggs once I got them home but them next day my copper Maran Wilma started sitting so I gave her a shot at it. I put her and 12 eggs in a separate broody box with her own run. God love her, she has done EVERYTHING by the book. If I read it, she does it, including the poop bombs. I hope hatching and raising goes as well as sitting has. I put the remaining eggs in an incubator. Wilma's due date is 9/11 and mine is 9/13. It took me a couple of days to get an incubator so she got hers going first. This is the first time for both of us! The I don't know what I am going to do with them if they all hatch but if the lady I got them from doesn't want them I will have to list them on Craigslist. It's a cycle, I guess. I live on a half acre only so keeping that many with a probable high percentage of roos is not feasible.

Here is Wilma, hard at work.

I JUST finished a hatch. those pictures are so tempting. There should be warnings when the photos are this good.

THanks for sharing:) Looks good!

Aw. She's gorgeous. What fun incubating/hatching is!

I love Wilma--what a good girl.

I plan to sell extra ducklings on craigslist. I'm not sure what I'm going to do with extra drakes yet, though--I may build a bachelor pad, or sell them for someone else's freezer. My dh doesn't really want to do "freezer camp prep" (i.e., slaughter) himself, and although I think I could help I certainly can't do it all by myself, so it looks like it's either bachelor pad or someone else's freezer.

Anyway, have fun. They should sell just fine--chickies are just so adorable, who can resist?
