Im on day 5 of my first hatch. What day is best to candle the eggs?
Or is it best just to leave them well alone? I cant wait to see what I get.

Ive got 1 black,1 White, 1 Blue, 1 Partrigde, 1 Gold laced, 1 Cockoo Orpington, 3 Marsh daisys & 4 Misc.

Yes I know 13 eggs unlucky for some

The last eggs I had in my incubator were brown eggs and the first I'd ever candled. I had no problem seeing embryos on 4 of the 6 eggs at Day 5 of incubation. But, I was able to see all 6 embryos when I checked again on Day 8. If you for sure want to see as many as you can, and know the duds from the viable, then I would wait until at least Day 8-10.

All the best!

i candled it on 7th days, you will see beautifull (for me) red bright vein. on some eggs i still can believe they're all failed so i candled again on 13rd days and spare 1 more life embryos. that's why don't throw any eggs that you didn't sure its condition, just leave it for another one week, if one week later you see no vein just cook it for your hen (another byc er suggestion) and make sure they didn't taste like an egg or you will see your hens start eating their eggs.

hope you success...

Most people wait until at least day 7, before then it is difficult to see anything, and you can injure the embryo by moving the egg a lot.

If the eggs are white, you can see something as early as 3 days, but that's if you know what to look for. Just be sure that you don't turn the egg every-which-way when candling, or the embryo could become entangled in the veins causing it to die...

A good 'rule of thumb' is to candle before you set them (to check for cracks), candle once around days 7-10 (to see if they are developing), then again on day 18 (to make sure they are still alive).

Try not to handle them too much

Thanks for all of the help. I will candle them. I wasn't sure if i could open the bator! Or if that was a big no no. This is all new to me.

You can open the bator, no problem! A hen setting on eggs doesn't stay on the eggs forever. She gets off at least once a day. Just make sure you don't mess with the temperature adjuster, cause the temp will drop (and humidity for that matter) when you take the top off. Just ignore it, the temp/humidity will come back up on its own.

no problem, even if you see my thread and keep looking for the pic, you can see my bator almost always open 4 hours a day

don't be confused, i live in power failure country, at least 4 hours a day power failure force me to light kerosene lamp everyday and if i close the bator then i will get it on fire.

so i just leave it opened for as long as i use kerosene lamp, and there are 4 ducks eggs with embryos "kicking" 2 days ago.

hope they still alive till they hatched.
