Hazel (5 year old chocolate Orpington) has been on metronidazole for 2.5 days (haven’t done evening dose for today yet). Her breathing has become more laboured, she breathes with her mouth slightly open and slightly growly and hoarse when she breathes out. Her poops have a lot of urates and are watery. Her crop is squishy but also has a lot of small gravel-like lumps which are also very hard.
When should the metronidazole start working? Any ideas on what the gravelly stuff is and how else to help her? Also, should I dissolve the tablet in water before giving it to her or just give it on its own? The instructions from the vet don’t mention what to do.

She’s a pet so I really don’t want to lose her, any help would be appreciated.

Unfortunately canker is very hard to treat. The yellow cankers can become large enough to block her airway and make eating difficult. Sometimes the growths need to be removed. I have never treated canker in my flock, but it can be difficult and may not always respond to the medications. What dosage did your vet prescribe? Dosage is 50 mg per pound usually. Acidified copper sulfate in the water 1/4 tsp per gallon is sometimes used to treat canker.
