Hello!
I know canker is talked about often, but usually older posts. I have three chickens with canker and I have used metro and Ronidazole so far. 14 days on Ronidazole. I only used metro on one of the girls so far. My question is, should I try Metronidazole again 20% in water for 10-14 days or is there something better I don’t know about? Any help is appreciated!

Most treatments should go right into the beak, not the water, unless the directions say that. That way you will know if they are getting the right dose. Metronidazole (Aqua Zole or Fish Zole) dosage is 50 mg per pound daily for 5 days. That is around 250 mg for an average 5 pound chicken. Some also use acidified copper sulfate. Waterers and feeders should be disinfected in 10% bleach, and affected birds should be separated. Pigeons and wild birds are carriers of canker. Does it smell bad?

It’s defy canker. I’ve used pills of metro before and still didn’t work. I’ve seen the most difference with this last round of Ronidazole in the water. They are separated. One didn’t make it. I had to put her down. The other ones seems to be improving. I guess after treatment how long until the yellow lesions fall off? Some are gone already. I could also treat for yeast I suppose.

Metronidazole is best given orally every day for 6 days. When meds are put in the water, the chicken may not get the correct dosage if they are not drinking well or if the water tastes bad. Feeders and waterers must be kept clean, and chickens should not drink from puddles or places where pigeons or wild birds are drinking. I have not treated canker, but it is one of the diseases that I would cull for. That way it doesn’t spread. Sorry that you are dealing with multiple chickens having this.

Thank you. One bird has already been culled. I think one more will have to as well. Two others are doing pretty well. Thanks for your input!
