hello, recently today i went to check on my flock as usual and i noticed one of my chickens sounded strange. So i picked her up and inspected her, when I open her mouth there are these very scary yellow things in her mouth and there’s a really bad odor coming from it. I have never had this happen before and I’m really scared for her. I saw somewhere that said they could be canker sores but i’m not sure. It kind of sounds like she’s gargling when she breathes and I just don’t know what to do. If someone could please help me it would be so appreciated.

Yes, that does look and sound like canker, also called trichomoniasis, a protozoan disease carried by pigeons and other wild birds. It is extremely contagious. Your other chickens may already be exposed. The treatments that can be used include metronidazole (Flagyl,) ronidazole, and acidified copper sulfate 1/4 tsp per gallon of water. The yellow cankers can invade the beak, tongue, throat, esophagus and into the crop wall. I would disinfect all waterers and feeders with 10% bleach water and rinse well. Prevent chickens from drinking out of puddles. Here is some reading:

thank you so so much

If you get the acidified copper sulfate powder, you can give your flock a treatment of 1/4 tsp per gallon of water for 3 days a month as a preventative for canker. The treatment dosage is longer if you use it for that. Let us know how your chicken gets along, and she should be separated from the others so she doesn’t spread the disease.

How is your chicken doing?

Have you ever tried using raw/unpasteurized honey? I have used Manuka honey from Wedderspoon for well over a decade with great success treating wounds, infections, GI issues, inflammation, cancer,... The link will take you to the kind I use. It has a new label now (150+ GMO), also found with KFactor 16 on the label. For chickens, I add a tsp. to a slurry I make (softened feed, softly scrambled egg, and whatever additional stuff they need, like vitamins or supplements). You can add it to drinking water, make sure it's fully dissolved, using warm water speeds this up, or liquify with some warm water and syringe feed, esp. if the chicken is not eating or drinking well. I have personally not used this for what you are dealing with. However, I knew someone who had extensive and very painful canker sores in her mouth. She started eating a tsp. of this honey per day. The sores healed and never returned.
