I have a 3 yo buff orp rooster who has been gurgling since I took him in from my brother six months ago. According to my brother he has done this for a very long time. I had to worm him for capillaria for five days with safeguard and then as I was doing the follow up worming that ended yesterday, he got so much worse. Mucous in his mouth and wet sounding in the hole to his trachea. Lungs clear. Crowing helped to clear it some. He got so weak he stopped eating and drinking. The smell was horrendous and his face has always smelled bad since I got him. I have never had this in any others so I didn’t know what it was. The two hens that came with him do not have any issues. I looked in his mouth and it was fine but I saw a small yellow thing on the side of his throat down his esophagus. Didn’t get a great look and it could have been food for all I know. No crop issues. Yesterday he slept all day and I truly feel he was on his way out. Deep sleep hard to disturb, refusing to eat and drink, and bile green stools with cream colored urates. Started him on miconizole women’s yeast infection cream per some threads on here at 3:30 yesterday and did more reading that these symptoms could fit canker so at 5:30 started ronidazole I had here in some old tablets since I felt he was dying and I didn’t have much time. Within two hours the mucous stopped and gurgle sounded clear and he began to nibble on food and drink some. Today he woke much better. He’s eating and drinking and back to himself. Tonight he has a little gurgle again and occasionally holding mouth open. Otherwise okay. Stools still look bad. I have no idea what he has and I’m treating him for both yeast infection and canker. I ordered copper sulfate. Does this stand out as one over the other in symptoms?

I am not an expert on canker, but it apparently smells very bad. Since it responded to the ronitazole, I would continue it, or get some Fish Zole and give 250 mg daily for 5-7 days. You can get that online from Allivet I think, and ronitazole is also available from pigeon suppliers.

So you think it sounds more like canker than thrush then? He’s back to gurgling tonight but good appetite so fingers crossed.

Yes, probably canker since it smells bad and there is yellow gink in his throat. Plus since it seemed better after a dise of the ronitazole. A vet should be able to see it on a slide to confirm. I have read threads where @dawg53 has commented on the odor being so bad. Wet fowl pox and candida (yeast, fungus) can look like canker, but I have read where those don’t have the odor. Candida is more whitish, I believe. I just don’t have first hand experience with any of those. Here is a link that sometimes can be unreliable on some diseases, but it compares canker and yeast symptoms:
