Canker!!!?

Thank you so much for replying. I did not know this was caused by a parasite! We just had the chickens in the coop the hen was in tested for parasites. We had the fecal sample done on the rooster in the coop though, not the hen. Could the hen in the coop be the only one with the parasite? Also, do you know what the moldy looking stuff is on the tip of her tongue? Thank you for all your help!

My hen had something that looked similar. Initially, I thought it was wet pox, but since there were no mosquitoes to transmit the virus, I treated it as if it was canker with a secondary infection. She was showing similar symptoms to the ones you described, but she was also itching at her throat a lot and had trouble eating and drinking. As soon as I noticed her symptoms, I isolated her from the flock.

HERE WAS MY TREATMENT PROCESS:

• I treated her with Oxytetracyline for a week (I purchased this from my local farm store). I put this in her water once a day
• I gave her vitamins and electrolytes in her water
• I also treated her with Fish Zole for six days (I had to purchase this on line). I dissolved one pill in a tiny bit of water and mixed a little food in with it to create a mash. I gave this to her once a day.

*I also gave her meal worms sprinkled in her water once a day to encourage her to drink and to give her extra protein

My hen is now laying eggs and doing great!! Luckily, none of my flock is showing symptoms.

Thank you so much for all your help! I was just wondering, do you have an idea of when I can put my hen back with the flock? I still have her in isolation because I am afraid she is still contagious even though she is acting fine and looks great.

Just as an update, three of her flock members are now showing symptoms of canker! I am going to put fish zole in the community waterer. How much should I put in?

It would probably be better to treat each chicken with an individual dose of fish zole or metronidazole, and keep them separated from other flock members. Acidified copper sulfate 1/4 tsp per gallon of water can be given for 3 days a month as a preventative to other flock members.

Ok, so I am still trying to resolve canker. I treated my rooster who had it individually with fish zole liquefied and crushed up in a syringe. I treated him for 7 days! He seems to be doing better, but the canker in his mouth is not going away. I guess I am kind of at a loss at what to do for him now.

You need to treat twice daily for 10 days.
I did this for 4 individuals who are all cured now. I used metronidazole liquid from vet.
