Canning for Dummies

Wal Mart is usually having a clearance this time of year on canning stuff and the BBB. Look at one of your town's largest retailers and you might find something on clearance.

BYW a food mill comes in handy if you venture into jellies, sauces and juices. Get one if you plan to do that.

Take Ozark hen up on it!! You will be glad to have that. Much quicker with a 'hands on' book than a computer. It is kind of like a bible. A canning bible book!

I LOVE the BBB, the best little book I have ever bought. Now if I could just find the thing and buy a pressure canner, I know all the open bath recipes almost by heart.

I love the classic book "Putting Food By". It is full of recipes and also explains the science behind canning.

I have two hot water bath canners and a large pressure canner. The only things I can in hot water bath are jams jellies, preserves, and tomatoes.

I have requested a food mill and a pressure cooker on Freecycle - but no one has responded. My mom has a food mill that she doesn't use anymore. When we talked last night, she said she was going to see if her sisters or mom had a pressure cooker that she would send me with her food mill. She called back to say one of her sisters wore out her cooker and didn't replace it and that my grandma used a water bath canner. She's gonna check with her other sister.

I actually love preparing apples for sauce by peeling and chopping, but it would be a huge time saver I know, to use the food mill.

I'm borrowing a pressure cooker from a friend next weekend to do the apple sauce and the weekend after to do the soups. I'll check Wal-Mart for a sale too, but I'm still hoping my aunt has her pressure cooker and wouldn't mind sending it my way.
