Hello All! I am interested in canning this season; we will be adding a vegetable garden and I want to store some of the goodies. I'll probably be ordering items on line and wondered if anyone can recommend a site they have found to be reasonable in pricing and shipping. Many thanks!

I hate to say it but the cheapest place I've found for brand new canning supplies is Wal-Mart. But mostly I post adds on Craigslist for canning jars and make out like crazy that way!

But the lids have always been the cheapest at Wally World

if you are talking pressure canning I would recommend an all American, and get it from amazon. If you sign up for their amazon prime trial membership you can get it overnighted for like $5.

Try freecycle for canning jars and as said before craigslist. They are not cheap new, but if you can find someone that got out of canning about 10 years ago they will be REALLY happy to get all of the jars out of their house. It is true walmart is one of the best places to get canning supplys new.

here is an excellent web site on canning and home food preservation, I actually found BYC from here

Also check out gardenweb.com and go the garden forums, then to the harvest forum, they are a wealth of info, and will teach you how to can safely. Make sure you use up to date recipes for canning and not any old recipe from the internet. (even old family recipes need to be updated) It is fun and a lot of work, but opening a jar of something you grew in the middle of winter is well worth it!
If you are going to be pickling and water bathing you can use any pot large enough to cover the jars with 2-3 inches of water and make sure you put something in the bottom of the pot so the jars are not touching the bottom of the pot! I have tied old jar rings together to place in the bottom of the pot first!
Get a Ball Blue Book, make sure it is up to date. Ace hard ware carries them too!
If you plan to can meat, and low acid foods like beans, a pressure canner is a must. Amazon has good prices. There is a lot to learn about choosing the right pressure canner for you so do a little research before you buy one. Make sure you buy a pressure canner and not just a pressure cooker!
