hello, last week i found my 1 yr.old silkie (casey) with her eye swollen shut.me and the dh chhecked her eye and did find something in it.so i flushed with saline and put terramycin in her eye and kept her in the house.the next day i noticed she had fluid in her nostrils and stuff stuck to her beak,so i thought possibly resp.my flock has been exposed, but they are pets and my flock is closed.so i started her on duramycin.for 2 days i smelled no infection.on day 3 i noticed a large amount of goo on her eye.when i picked her up the smell was horrible.so the dh held her and i saturated a couple of cotton balls w/saline,the first wipe i got the whole glob off,and almost lost my breakfast.the second wipe got more goo and something black.it had shape,so again almost lost my breakfast and quickly threw it out.i flushed then used the terramycin.as an after thought i wondered if it had been her eye ball.

i shouldve examined it.so tomorrow will be 7 days on the duramycin, and 5 days using the saline and terramycin twice a day.i havent smelled infection since i got all that goo out,and alot of swelling has gone done, but not all.i see no more liquid in her nostrils and her beak is clean.her eating, pooing, drinking is all good, but she still wont open her eye.so should i finish up her meds tomorrow then put her back out monday or what? is there anything else you all can recommend or is this the best its gonna be? sorry this is so long but i wanted to give alot of facts.thanks for any advice..

I have found that the eye swelling takes a little longer to go away. Just make sure it is not crusted shut and in a matter of 2-4 days it should be back to normal. I just dealt with a whole flock of this and the eyes always seem to be the last thing to clear up even with the antibiotics.

Hi kyrose, sorry to hear about your little silkie casey, I don't have any idea what this could be but I wouldn't put her outside till it's completely healed and cleared up. you don't want to risk her getting pecked or dust bathing and getting dirt in it. Hopefully the antibiotics have done their job and you'll see more improvement in the days ahead. and laying an egg is good!

ive actually been treating the eye for about 5 days..i feel so sorry for her.she wants back out so bad...
hello misslydia, good to hear from you again..

thought id give an update on casey.took her to the vet and didnt get the best news.unfortunately the foriegn objects i got out of her eye had already dont the damage.her eye is in jeopardy of rupturing.if that happens he needs to knock her out and remove her eye and suture it closed.we all no how dangerous surgery can be to a chicken, but he said if we didnt do it then infection would spread to her brain and kill her.so for right now i have to flush her eye with a betadine solution and continue the terramycin twice a day.he is hoping a scab will develope on her eye and keep it from rupturing, but she has definitely lost vision in that eye.i told him thats the least of my worries.she will do fine with just 1 eye.so im crossing my fingers that surgery wont be necessary.i have to take her back friday,so please cross your fingers for casey.

I hope the eye gets better, but I think it would be better if the vet went on ahead and removed the eye and sewed it up. Casey will eventually get the eye reinfected even if she scratches it (poop on her feet/mud etc) or bumps into something...bacteria is everywhere. Good luck.

I honestly dont know Kyrose....I've never had it done. I would ask the vet when you go back for Casey's reevaluation. Ask him if he's ever done it before on a chicken and what were the results. It'll be your decision. I was just thinking ahead of what could possibly happen....it's a tough situation.

he deals with exotic animals but has never done this on a chicken.hamster yes chicken no..lol but i had read somewhere that its the stuff they put them to sleep with thats so dangerous because of the way their resp.is.thats why he wants to try this first.poor little casey, shes a real sweet heart.
