I actually (just recently) went through my list UN-following people
I had too many that I didn't need, so I was narrowing it down to specific people.

With that many follows, is the alert button even usable anymore? I'm just imagining you logging in for the day and seeing a few hundred alerts popping up.

I have followed a few because they followed me first, but I really don't see the big deal of it. You never hear from those people.

No, it doesn't do that. I'm not exactly sure what the real reason is....but most people use it has a friendly gesture.
